The Secret to Happiness

Have you noticed that wherever we are, we wish we were somewhere else? If it’s summer, we wish it were fall. If it’s winter, we can’t wait for it to be summer. No matter what we have, we seem to want what our friend or neighbor has. Contentment is a challenge when you live in an environment that is smothered in the idea that material possessions equal happiness. In the US, we live in an environment where almost everyone is “rich.” Hardships here are hardly considered hardships in the rest of the world. We complain because our cell phone doesn’t have the reception we want. We grumble because our truck doesn’t have the accessory we think we need.
As the American holiday of Thanksgiving approaches, I can tell you the secret to happiness. It’s not in arriving at a particular season or getting what we have always wanted. Gratitude is the secret to happiness. Truly giving thanks for all that we have been blessed with is the secret to genuine happiness. Whatever we have is what God has blessed us with for this time in our lives. We have so much for which to be thankful. Enjoy this season in your life. As the old hymn says:
“Count your blessings, name them one by one,
Count your blessings, see what God hath done!
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.”
As you count, enjoy a season of thanksgiving and happiness. 1 Thessalonians 5:18
